Recruit Training
Previous PageThe Philadelphia Police Academy

The Philadelphia Police Academy is a multi-faceted educational facility serving the training needs of law enforcement personnel from Philadelphia and it's surrounding communities. Located at 8501 State Road, the Academy is the nerve center of recruit training, offering an expanded curriculum of 1042 hours of physical training, driver education, law, range training, CPR and first aid, to name a few.

"Enter to learn, leave to serve" is the sign which greets recruit officers as they report for early morning roll call. More than just a sign, these words serve as a reminder of each police officer's promise to protect and improve the quality of life for all Philadelphians. Integrity, professionalism, honesty and truth are just some of the virtues stressed to recruit officers on a daily basis.

On any given day, the Academy is bustling with hundreds of recruit officers, uniforms pressed, hair cut and shoes shined, rotating from one area of instruction to another. Thirty-three state certified Instructors, many with Bachelor and Masters degrees, lecture within the two largest buildings on campus. Each year, approximately 500 recruit officers are trained and graduate as police officers. In the evening, the Academy is home to five area colleges, which offer police officers an opportunity to further their education, thus enhancing their personal and professional credibility.

The Main Building is adjacent to State Road at the beginning of the academy entrance and contains administrative offices, a gymnasium, kitchen/vending area and three classrooms. Across the way from the Main Building is the Library and Driver Training Building. Looking east, to the right of these buildings are two Trailers which house an office for the Police Recruitment Unit and a classroom for Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) Training. Down the road on the left is Valor Hall, a prefabricated modular building which holds six classrooms, a computer lab, driver simulation room and instructor's office space.

At the other end of the campus on the east side is the Firearms Training Unit. This area is comprised of several buildings housing administrative offices, classrooms and an armory. There are also three firing ranges of various sizes and a trailer containing a Firearms Training Simulator (FATS) at this location. Also located on this side of the campus are buildings containing the Bomb Disposal and Canine Units.

Staff
Instructors assigned to units of the Police Academy are required to be certified by the MPOETC as an Instructor for Professional Law Enforcement Skills. Certification is awarded upon completion of the department's eighty hour Instructor Course. The majority of instructors are degreed personnel in various fields of study. Others have specific and demonstrated expertise in subject areas and many years of professional law enforcement experience.

The Philadelphia Police Department is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
