Tour training as a Philadelphia Police Officer is conducted at the Philadelphia Police Academy, 8501 State Road in Philadelphia. Training is conducted Monday thru Friday, 8AM to 4PM, weekends off.

In the first two days at the academy we explain the rules and regulations that a recruit officer must follow. During the first two days your benefits are explained to you by the city, the FOP, and your health care provider. Then, during your first week of training, you will have your first physical fitness test. This is done so you can work on the areas you are weak at. You will be given time improve your performance before your final physical fitness test.

A recruit officer must pass all areas of the curriculum in order to graduate from the Police Academy. The curriculum includes: Physical Fitness, Defensive Tactics, Criminal Laws of PA., The PA Motor Vehicle Code, Driver's Education, Police Department Directives, Computer Training, Firearms Training, Report Writing, Radio Procedure, and many other subjects.

The training period at the Philadelphia Police Academy is thirty (30) weeks long.

Physical Training
Physical fitness training is an important part of your academy training. Each Recruit Officer must pass the fitness test with a score of 75%. The fitness test is three parts, the bench press, 1 minute of sit-ups, and a 1.5 mile run. The standards for each part of the test are different, depending on the persons age and sex. For example, the 1.5 mile run for a male 30 to 39 for a grade of 90 is 10:47, for a female 30 to 39 for a grade of 90 is 13:43. A recruit must finish each of the phases of testing with a minimum passing grade of 75%.

Another phase of physical training is learning defensive tactics. You will learn how to defend yourself by utilizing various defensive techniques to reduce the incidence of injury to the officer and the offender. You will also learn the proper use of handcuff restraints and proper searching techniques.

Certification
Upon graduating the Police Academy the Recruit Officer becomes a State Certified Municipal Police Officer. This will give the officer police powers any where in the state of PA.. Each year every Police Officer must complete training to keep their certification. This certification gives officers an opportunity to work for another Police Agency that participates in the Municipal Police Officers Certification standard (MPO).

Each year the training to keep your MPO certification valid is updated on the Laws of PA., Officer Safety updates, updates of the PA. Motor Vehicle Code, and qualifying at the pistol range. Every other year there is first aid and CPR updates to keep your certification.

Schedule
A typical day of training starts at 8AM with your platoon's roll call. After everyone is accounted for, your platoon Sergeant will pass along any information you need to know for the day. Your first class is typically scheduled to begin promptly at 8:10AM.

Morning training runs from 8AM to 12PM. There are four blocks of training in the morning. Each block is approx. fifty minutes long with a ten minute break between each class. For example, from 8:10AM to 10:00AM your platoon might have two blocks of juvenile law then at 10:10AM to 12:00PM you might have driver's training.

At approximately noon, you will be dismissed for lunch until 1:00PM. Following lunch, you will again have a roll call and receive instruction from your platoon Sergeant. In the afternoon there are three blocks of training scheduled that last from 1:10PM to 4:00PM. To illustrate, you might have physical fitness training from 1:10PM to 3:00PM followed by a final class in departmental forms. At 4:00PM, after your last class, you will be dismissed.
