he Police Athletic League is "Cops Helping Kids"--an
independent, non-profit organization that enhances education,
creates leaders and provides a stability which results in successful,
determined individuals.
Since 1947, the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia has
helped youngsters overcome challenges and enhance their skills.
Through a broad array of sports, educational and cultural activities,
PAL helps youngsters develop self-esteem and ambition in a free,
safe and fun environment. The 23 centers provide a safe haven
in which to meet, play and learn for more than 27,000 boys and
girls, ages 6 to 18. The facilities and programs are supervised
by Philadelphia Police Officers specially trained in youth activities
and sports.
Activities & Programs
Through athletic and recreational activities, PAL offers youngsters
opportunities that might not otherwise be available to them.
Traditionally known for its athletics, PAL has evolved to offer
more than just sports. PAL has initiated many educational programs.

Campaign Goals
$1.8 million is needed annually for the operation and maintenance
of the existing centers, including equipment, materials and
administration of programs. No youngster ever pays to join PAL
or to participate in any of its activities. PAL is supported
by contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations.
According to the National Center on Juvenile Justice, the peak
hours for violent juvenile crime are 3 PM to 9 PM. Fifty percent
of all violent juvenile crime is committed during this six-hour
period. PAL Centers are open during these peak hours when youngsters
are most vulnerable.
