he core curricula of the School-Based Safety Education program
consists of five individual blocks of instruction concerned with
safety issues in the areas of: Pedestrian Safety, the Dangerous
Stranger, Bicycle Safety, Gun Safety and 911 Emergency Telephone
Calling. Each of these courses, approximately one hour in length,
is presented to students from grades K-5 in classroom settings,
recreation center after school programs and summer day camps.
Two (2) police officers from the Community Relations Unit currently
teach these courses in the elementary public and parochial schools
throughout the city. A brief synopsis of each block of instruction
is as follows:
Pedestrian Safety
Children are taught the meaning and appropriate responses to
traffic lights and signals. Instruction is given on the correct
methods to cross streets, to wait for proper signals and to
look for danger signs in the street and adjoining sidewalks.
Interactive teaching is a major component to this instruction.
Dangerous Stranger
Four safety rules are the heart of this instruction. Children
are taught (1) don't talk to strangers, (2) don't take anything
from strangers, (3) don't go anywhere with strangers, and (4)
tell a trusted adult if a stranger tries any of the points in
(1) through (3). Classes with upper elementary grade children
are encouraged to ask specific questions which pertain to past
experiences they may have had and instructors apply street safety
tips to direct the students.
Bicycle Safety
Children are instructed on the proper places and safety methods
that should be practiced while riding a bicycle. Students are
also given a demonstration on the correct way to wear a helmet,
the reasons they should wear a helmet and the dangers of not
wearing a helmet. They are informed of the state law requiring
that bicycle riders 12 years of age and younger wear a helmet.
9-1-1 Program
The 9-1-1 emergency telephone program gives children information
about 9-1-1, what it is and does, and tells the students how
to use the system in an emergency. Situation examples used in
the program are extremely valuable to the youngsters in helping
them relate to the use of 9-1-1.
Gun Safety
Gun safety is the most important safety program offered in this
package because of the high frequency of gun/juvenile incidents
reported across the country in recent months. This program shows
young people that guns are dangerous, that they are not toys
and should never be handled. Four instructions which are ingrained
in the participating students are (1) Stop, (2) don't touch,
(3) leave the area, and (4) tell an adult. Officers use personal
knowledge and experience with firearms to clarify and inform
the young audience that guns are never to be used at any time
for any reason because guns kill.
