1st District is located in the southernmost part of Philadelphia.
It's boundaries are Broad Street west to the Schuylkill Expressway,
Moore Street south to the entrance of the Naval Shipyard. It is
anticipated that effective during the year 2000, the 1st District
will be responsible for patrolling the confines of the Naval Shipyard
Business Center.
Currently, personnel assigned to the 1st District include approximately
20 police supervisors, 100 police officers, and 10 civilian
employees.
The geographic makeup of the 1st District is predominately
residential with approximately 42,000 people residing here.
The racial composition of the area is approximately 64% white,
31% black, and 5% other. There are six (6) business areas scattered
throughout the district.
The 1st District is also home to several major industrial plants
including the Sunoco Refinery and the Philadelphia Gas Works.
Also, Saint Agnes Hospital & Burn Center is located in the
1st District.
The 1st District is also the home of several parks and recreation
centers including Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Park, (referred
to by South Philadelphians as "The Lakes") which offers
bicycle paths, tennis, fishing, swimming, playgrounds, and baseball
fields, including the newly constructed Richie Ashburn Fields.
The Swedish American Historical Museum is also located at FDR
Park.
1st District headquarters, located at 2301 S. 24th Street,
is also divisional headquarters for all of South Police Division,
and is the central prisoner processing center for the entire
division. South Detective Division is also located on the 2nd
floor of 1st District headquarters.
Members of the 1st District handle approximately 45,000 incidents
per year, and are dedicated to providing service to the community
which leads to a better quality of life.
