The 6th Police District is one of the most challenging districts in the Philadelphia Police Department. Although it is one of the smallest patrol districts covering only 2.1 square miles, the Police Officers have to deal with various types of crime.

The 6th District contains almost 30,000 full time residents but they represent every facet of our modern American melting pot culture. We have African-Americans, Caucasian, Asians, Latinos, rich people, poor people, and middle class. Sixth District Police Officers may deal with a homeless person living on a vent on one call, and next be called to meet a millionaire. During the business day our population swells to 250, 0OO when we consider all the business people, office workers, merchants, shoppers, visitors, commuters, sightseers and tourists who come to center city.

Sixth District Officers provide profession service to such diverse neighborhoods as the Richard Allen Homes, Society Hill, Northern Liberties, Chinatown, Washington Square West, Pennslanding, Center City Business District, East and West Poplar, Spring Garden, and Old City. Our Police Officers need to be very adaptable to provide community oriented police services to these different areas.

In 1998 and again in 1999 we were proud to report a decrease in the crime rate and complaints against Police. I believe this demonstrates our commitment to provide quality service in a professional manner.

With the completion of the Convention Center and the Avenue of the Arts, and major development on the Waterfront and Market Street, these projects are making a major impact on surrounding neighborhoods and the city at large. This makes more of a challenge for the 6th Police District Officers to provide a clean, safe and a vibrant Center City that would benefit us all. The Captain and his Officers have already started making their contribution.
