 he
Philadelphia Police Marine Unit has been in operation since April
9, 1859. Over the years the Marine Unit has evolved and adapted
to many different duties that it has been delegated. In the 1950's,
diving was added to the myriad of duties that the Marine Unit
handles. The unit has progressed from the cumbersome "hard-hat"
style of diving to a modern, lighter design with reliable underwater
communications.
The Marine Unit is an extension and supplement to the patrol
force of the Philadelphia Police Department. Our mission is
to respond to all water related emergencies, conducting search/rescues
and recoveries of persons, properties and evidence from the
water.
The main thrust of the Marine Unit is to ensure the safety
of those persons using the waterways of Philadelphia. To date,
the Unit has conducted 264 rescues of persons in water related
incidents since 1988. However, the Unit has also had the unenviable
task of recovering 232 bodies from the waterways of Philadelphia,
during that same period, of persons who either intentionally
or accidentally entered the water.
