Previous PagePolice Polygraph Unit

The Polygraph Unit has been in existence in the Philadelphia Police Department since 1953 , with one (1) examiner and one (1) instrument. During its first year approximately two hundred (200) examinations were conducted. At the present time the Polygraph Unit is part of the Forensic Sciences Division.

The Polygraph Unit serves as an investigative aid for criminal investigations, conducting examinations of suspects, victims, witnesses and informants; and the unit is a component in the hiring process of Police applicants and personnel seeking reinstatement. Unit services are also provided to outside jurisdictions, upon approval of the Police Commissioner.

The Polygraph Unit also maintains voice recordings of all sworn officers in the department for voice-print analysis if required.

During the year, approximately 120 investigative examinations and 2300 police applicant examinations are conducted.

Polygraph Unit personnel require specialized training which is provided by an outside accredited Polygraph School. The training includes 256 hour of classroom study followed by an internship program which takes approximately one (1) year.

Current Staff: One (1) Lieutenant Commanding Officer; two (2) Sergeants-Squad Supervisors; two (2) Detectives and five (5) Police Officers. Personnel assigned to the Polygraph Unit are divided into 2 squads, working the 8:am to 4:pm tour and 4:pm to 12:pm tour.

The Polygraph Unit is located in Room B-7 of the Police Administration Building. There are two (2) examinations rooms with instruments and two (2) back up instruments which could be used for off site examinations. The Polygraph unit also has a Voice Spectrograph Machine for Voice-Print analysis. The Polygraph Unit is kept locked at all times due to the extremely sensitive reports kept in the unit.
