Training Unit

he Mission of the Philadelphia Police Department's Firearms Training
Unit is to instruct and instill through professional training,
proper techniques in combat firearms proficiency and safety with
weapons used in the field of law enforcement; To adequately equip
and competently prepare police officers with firearms and non-lethal
alternatives so they may successfully overcome a forcible encounter.
To promote a true partnership with the citizens of Philadelphia
by raising awareness both within the department and throughout
the community of the critical need for safety in the ownership,
use and handling of firearms. Through our efforts, we will strive
to project the Pride, Enthusiasm and Integrity which serves as
the hallmark of this unit's tradition.
The Firearms Training Unit is responsible for initial recruit
firearm training and the annual firearms requalification of
all Philadelphia Police Officers.
The Firearms Training Unit is situated on the grounds of the
Philadelphia Police Academy, 8501 State Road and maintains four
(4) ranges.
Range # 1 is a 50 yard, 50 position firing range. This range
is equipped with a stadium type lighting system for night shooting.
It is the largest of the 4 ranges.
Range # 2 is a 50 yard, 20 position firing range. This range
is also equipped with a stadium type lighting system for night
shooting.
Range # 3 is a 200 yard, 8 position, multi-purpose range that
is used largely by the S.W.A.T. Unit. It's length accommodates
rifle training, while intermediate target stands, at 50 and
100 yards, accommodate handgun, shotgun and sub-machine gun.
Range # 4 is a 25 yard, 10 position firing range. This range
has a "low light" lighting system. A Hogan's Alley
and Running Man target system will be operational in the near
future on Range # 4.
