in death, missing persons investigations, thefts, auto thefts,
arsons, assault and domestic violence.
The mission of the Detective Division is to serve and protect
the life and property of those who live, work, visit and invest
in the South Philadelphia community with fairness and without
prejudice.
During 1999, the division conducted 10,643 investigations.
To accomplish this successfully the division relies on a partnership
not only with the uniformed officers assigned to South Police
Division but also with the citizens the division serves. The
boundaries of the division are from the Northern boundary, Lombard
Street South to the Philadelphia Navy Yard, East to the Delaware
River and West to the Schuykill River. While most of the division
is residential, there are large shopping and recreational areas
located along South Street, Delaware Ave., the historical Italian
market located on 9th Street between Federal and Christian Streets
and the sports complex located at Broad and Pattison which includes
the First Union center home of the Flyers NHL hockey team, the
Philadelphia 76ers NBA basketball team, the Spectrum home of
the Philadelphia Phantoms minor league hockey team and Veterans
Stadium home of the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies.
Within the boundaries of the division are several industrial
complexes including: SUNOCO oil refineries 2800 Passyunk Ave,
Philadelphia Food distribution center located between Packer
and Pattison Avenues between Front street and 7th Street and
the Philadelphia Seaport along Delaware Ave., which ranks as
one of the largest shipping ports on the East coast.
The detective division operates twenty-four hours a day, seven
days a week.
