S outh Detective Division is the criminal investigative unit of the Philadelphia Police Department which investigates crimes that occur within the boundaries of the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 17th Police Districts. Personnel within the division include investigators trained in hostage negotiations, crime scene processing, white collar crime, robberies, burglaries, industrial accidents resulting in death, missing persons investigations, thefts, auto thefts, arsons, assault and domestic violence.

The mission of the Detective Division is to serve and protect the life and property of those who live, work, visit and invest in the South Philadelphia community with fairness and without prejudice.

During 1999, the division conducted 10,643 investigations. To accomplish this successfully the division relies on a partnership not only with the uniformed officers assigned to South Police Division but also with the citizens the division serves. The boundaries of the division are from the Northern boundary, Lombard Street South to the Philadelphia Navy Yard, East to the Delaware River and West to the Schuykill River. While most of the division is residential, there are large shopping and recreational areas located along South Street, Delaware Ave., the historical Italian market located on 9th Street between Federal and Christian Streets and the sports complex located at Broad and Pattison which includes the First Union center home of the Flyers NHL hockey team, the Philadelphia 76ers NBA basketball team, the Spectrum home of the Philadelphia Phantoms minor league hockey team and Veterans Stadium home of the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies. Within the boundaries of the division are several industrial complexes including: SUNOCO oil refineries 2800 Passyunk Ave, Philadelphia Food distribution center located between Packer and Pattison Avenues between Front street and 7th Street and the Philadelphia Seaport along Delaware Ave., which ranks as one of the largest shipping ports on the East coast.

The detective division operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
