Criminalistics is the unit of the Forensic Sciences Division, commonly referred to as the "Crime Lab", is responsible for analysis of all physical evidence, other than controlled substances or firearms, related to crimes of violence and property. Typical examples are: homicide, assault, sexual assault, burglary, etc.

Critical analysis is performed in three categories: (1) Trace evidence, like paint, fibers, gunshot residue; (2) Biological evidence - blood, semen, hairs and (3) Miscellaneous evidence - footwear impressions, arsons.

The Unit plays a major role in linking defendants to a crime with physical evidence comparisons, and resolving conflicting statements from witnesses.

The Philadelphia Police Department's Criminalistics Unit maintains itself as a full-service facility, able to perform a wide variety of testing procedures. All of the scientists in the unit testify in court regularly.
