Crime
Analysis & Mapping Unit
 he
Crime Analysis and Mapping Unit was launched in September 1997
as part of a grant from the National Institute of Justice (NIJ).
This unit represents a significant addition to the Police Department's
information processing capacity.
The members of this unit are geographic information system
(GIS) specialists and their primary function is to analyze and
illustrate crime- related patterns on computerized maps of the
city. At the weekly Compstat meetings crime maps are displayed
while command staff direct mapping personnel to highlight areas
of interest, perform summary statistics and display prominent
crime patterns. This unit has developed a mapping system that
gives commanders the ability to create maps and analyze crime
from remote locations.
